Looking to start the New Year without being squished into the crowd? Tired of the usual raving at New York, London, Paris, Sydney and Hong Kong?  Do you want to be at a great party that the whole world might not be at? You’ve landed at just the right place! Read through to start your New Year with a bang!

1. Boracay Island, The Philippines

World’s best New Year celebrations

Located along the White Beach on the south of Manila, Boracay Island is the most picturesque place in the world to take in the final sunset of 2017. All the action centers on the strip of bars along the sand are decorated so beautifully that you can just not take your eyes off them! The best part of a New Year’s party here is that you can just walk in and start partying dressed in just flip-flops and shorts. As the clock strikes 12:00, there is a wonderful display of fireworks near station 2 that is a way to bid farewell to 2017 and welcome 2018.

2. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

World’s best New Year celebrations

Rio is one of those places that never needs a reason to party. Known as one of the best party cities in the world, there is no reason why you should not start your year in Rio! While every corner of the city is having a party of its own, the Copacabana beach outshines them all! Revelers decked out in all white — said to bring luck in the New Year — pack the shore, where the summer heat is made considerably more tolerable by the perpetual spraying of Champagne along the sand. At midnight, there is also a flower custom that is followed by the locals to welcome the New Year. People ceremonially throw flowers into the ocean as a tribute to the sea goddess Yemanja and pray for a blossoming year ahead.

3. Cape Town, South Africa

World’s best New Year celebrations

Ever imagined watching fireworks over the water? One of the best ways to celebrate New Year in Cape Town is to camp at the Table Mountain where you can catch the show with a perfect view out over the water and the city below. This is just the beginning of the party that continues well into New Year’s Day, culminating in the Cape Town Minstrel Carnival Parade. This parade is famous for seeing the largest congregation of painted faces (around 10000) who wind their way through the town to ring in 2018.

4. Reykjavik, Iceland

World’s best New Year celebrations

New Year festivities in Iceland begin before anyone else. With only 4 hours of sunlight, they begin lighting fireworks from midafternoon itself. There are bonfire parties all over the city as they believe that it burns away all previous years negativity. As evening sets in, everyone in Reykjavik has their own little private fireworks show, leading up to the main national display with literally tons of fireworks exploding over the city. If you are lucky, you may also witness the famous Northern lights join the show. Iceland also has a newfound reputation for the best nightclubs in the world thus making it a party destination for New Year.

5. Niagara Falls, Ontario

World’s best New Year celebrations

Get ready to start your New Year by being present in two different places at the same time! Yes, I’m talking about the famous New Year bash that takes place at the US-Canada border. There is a massive display of fireworks that can be seen from both sides. But the real party lies north of the border in Queen Victoria Park. Here, a concert takes place all night long leading up to not one but TWO Canadian fireworks displays. The biggest NYE crowd in Canada jams into the park and try and keep warm with food and drinks until the colors hit the sky over Niagara Gorge at midnight.

6. Edinburgh, Scotland

World’s best New Year celebrations

New Year in Scotland? Oh, this means it’s time for Scotland’s outdoor festival! The locals celebrate a three-day year-end festival that begins on the 30th of December. A processional of torch-carrying partiers walks from Parliament Square to Calton Hill for Edinburgh’s New Year’s Eve fireworks display. On the 31st of December, the city comes alive with street parties and concerts in the day and 4.5 tons of fireworks over Edinburgh castle dominate the night. New Year’s Day brings more outdoor rigors: a run down the Royal Mile, a polar plunge into the River Forth, or the traditional dogsled race.
